Medicine/Engineering/Science convergence - Opportunities for electronics in healthcare

Background

Effective innovation in medicine and biomedical technology is required to address the world’s healthcare problems of the 21st century. This can only be brought about by the convergence of engineering, science and medicine.

Lord Darzi, Parliamentary Under Secretary in the Department of Health, in his recent "Next Stage Review of the NHS" report, pointed out that the NHS has focused upon high priority areas for future care to help people stay healthy, and that if they fall ill they will get greater control of their own care. Monitoring devices that might be used to effect such objectives, whether in an acute context or in a primary care or community context is but one example of electronics in healthcare that will be covered at the event.

Purpose of the Day

The "Opportunities for Electronics in Healthcare" event is being organised to stimulate Open Innovation, bringing together medical electronics companies (large and small) with the academic and clinical communities. Beyond that the event is an opportunity for electronics companies not currently involved in the healthcare arena to find out more, and potentially get involved in, this lucrative and relatively recession proof industry sector.

The presentation session will feature several exciting new electronics based medical technology projects/products developed in the course of multidisciplinary research at the clinical interface. Presentations will be made from the academic, industrial and clinical perspectives.

The next session will see several discussion groups being hosted and allow delegates with common interests to forge new links and establish a platform for future collaborations.

The day will conclude with a champagne reception and fork buffet during which there will be ample time for networking and a poster session.

The event is aimed at

  • Innovative companies and individuals with an existing interest in electronics based medical technology
  • Innovative companies and individuals from the electronics industry with an interest in becoming involved in electronics based medical technology
  • Medical device and health and wellness industry members, academics and researchers
  • Clinicians and Medical Physicists and other professionals in the Healthcare Service
  • Organisations and companies providing support services to the electronics and medical device communities
